What I Did to Speed Up My Computer
9 Feb 2010
When it took minutes just to get to my desktop and programs waited forever before they loaded, I decided it was time to speed up my computer. Like most people, I knew the importance of regular cleaning and maintenance on my computer, but I just didn’t take the time to do what needed to be done. While it may take a little time to do what’s necessary to get your computer back up to top speed, you will actually save time when your computer loads more quickly.
The first step in any computer maintenance is to backup whatever you’re about to work on. If you have a backup program, use it. While basic cleaning on your computer comes with only a very small risk of data loss, you can never be too careful. If you don’t have a backup program, you should strongly consider getting one. There are plenty of web-based companies that can store your data for only a few dollars a month. If you have important information on your computer, it’s very much worth the money.
A great starting point with cleaning up your computer is running a registry cleaner. You can find a wide range of quality in registry cleaners. There are free cleaners available for download, but they may be poorly programmed or lacking tools you want. Because of this, it is always best to go with a paid program from an established company. That way, even if you do have a problem, you will get the customer service to help you out. Registry cleaners are very straight forward and anyone can use them. You simply backup the registry, then run the cleaner.
After you run a cleaner, you’ll want to run a couple programs that are so important Microsoft included them with every copy of Windows. Scan disk and drive defrag are both found under system tools and can dramatically improve the speed of your computer. They basically find errors on your drives that may be causing problems and then restructure your files so they load more quickly. The programs essentially run themselves, but since they may take a while, you should consider starting them at night before you go to bed.
One thing that might be robbing your computer of speed is a connected network drive. If you run a computer on a network you may have drives connected from other computers that are taking up memory when you load. Because the system has to scan all drives, it takes a lot of extra time to scan drives that you may not even plan on using. Disconnecting them is very simple and can speed up your load times.
I get annoyed and impatient at all of the programs that autostart. It is most annoying when I am accessing the hard disk for important files, and I have to wait for all of these programs to open. I finally went into the “system configuration tool”, and modified the programs that I didn’t need to autostart.
Most of these steps are free and all of them are easy to do. It doesn’t take a professional to get your computer running back at top speed. It just requires you to roll up your sleeves and do a little cleaning. I followed all of these steps when I chose to speed up my computer and the difference has completely eliminated my frustrations and aggravations from having a sluggish PC.
These are only some of the easy but successful methods I used to speed up my computer. Any PC user can surely do these too! Visit http://www.helpspeedupmycomputer.com for more tips and information to help get your computer back up to speed!
