Remember that old saying, “back in the good old days?” Why can’t we stay in those “good old days?” I do not want a laptop computer! There are people in my family though, who hope I will think otherwise.

I hate technology! I am so ignorant when it comes to dealing with electronic devices. I see it all as a great big pain in the butt! Two of my children decide it’s time for mom to have a laptop computer.

When the gift arrived at my house, I must admit, I was intimidated. I sat in my favorite chair, and carefully opened the package. I held my breath.

I sat the package on my sewing table and looked at it for a long time. I am not sure what held my hands to my side. I finally pulled off the tape.

I felt myself hyperventilating. “How am I going to do this?” I spoke aloud to myself. “I’m a plain country girl. I milk cows, feed chickens, grow gardens, sew clothes, what in the world will I do with this thing!”

I could not breathe. I could not think. “Can I survive this?” I thought frantically. “I am only a woman. I do nothing but, work all day. What makes anyone think I can deal with this monster!”

I have faced many turmoils, in my life, this little laptop computer was not going to get the better of me. But then, there was something more staring me in the face.

Oh my god, those darn instructions!

My hands trembled as I reached for those directions and yes, they were daunting! All the letters of the alphabet jumbled themselves before my sight! I could not see words only meaningless garbage! My eyes watered, my temperature got hotter, my brain hurt!

Slowly, I could hear a phone ringing in the distance. It was my sweet cellular phone! I remember when I first got it and it also made me dizzy. Now, it is a solemn friend. Could my feelings change about my laptop computer?

Through the fog of wackiness I held my phone to my ear and heard a voice, “Mom?” “Did you get your gift today?” “Do you like how pretty it is?” “It is a fantastic model!” “Is the carrying case the right color?” My child talks a thousand miles a minute!

“Mom?” I heard the voice of my eldest child. “Did you get your new laptop computer?” “Are you excited?” I did not know what to say. I certainly did not want to disappoint my offspring. They were only doing what they thought was best. I started to speak but, was cut off.

“I know you really hate electronics. But, this will help you stay in touch with the family. E-mail, the Internet. I will be down this week to help you understand how to use it and you will learn to love it. Don’t worry. I love you. Talk to you soon! Bye.”

Is it possible my laptop computer could also become my friend?
