Avoiding Spyware
23 Sep 2009
Spyware is a form of malware that gets into your computer and does everything from sending your internet browser to random home pages to stealing your personal identity. As such, it is crucial that you take preventive measures to keep spyware from getting into your operating system and eliminating it if it has already gotten through.
Making sure that you don’t get any spyware in the future and getting rid of any you have now is done by getting a spyware removal program. You can get them for free from trusted sources such as Ad-Aware by Lavasoft. You can also buy them for approximately $50. When searching for a free solution, watch out for online advertisements offering spyware software as they may be spyware in disguise.
Aside from getting software you can take these steps to prevent spyware from making a home in your computer…
Keep you operating system (OS) and browser on the newest version by updating them. Also, you may want to ditch Internet Explorer as it is the most used web browser and, as such, the most targeted for spyware.
Don’t use P2P file sharing networks. If you download something, you may very well be getting some type of malware. Some of these networks install spyware on your computer even if you don’t download files from them.
Only download files from sites that you can trust. You should be very weary of downloading movies or music, especially ones that are free to download.
Make sure that your internet security settings are at reasonable levels. You should go to the tools of your browser and have them at least at the medium level.
It is advised that you get a firewall because it will keep people from having access to your computer.
Avoid free toolbars, which are from some unknown company. However, you can install a toolbar from a trusted source, such as Google, which can stop popups from appearing on your browser and thus prevent spyware in the process.
Reading the privacy statements and license agreements of things that you download is oft-mentioned advice for the prevention of spyware. You can save yourself some time from having to do this by only downloading from sources that you know and trust.
