Hard drives are found in all computers and laptops. There are also external hard drives you can plug into your current computer to use. Many computers will also contain more than one hard drive. Supercomputers and mainframes will be connected to many different drives. Many video players and camcorders also use a hard disk.

The original hard disks were very large and would only contain a few MB. They became called hard disks in order to distinguish them between floppy disks. The section of the hard drive that is hard is the hard platter than contains the magnetic part that holds the information or data. Interestingly enough a hard drive uses the same process or recording as a cassette tape.

The hard platter will be made of either high precision aluminum and very few platters are made of glass. These disks or platters are polished to be very smooth, like mirrors. Your hard disk besides will store allow your data and any of it can be accessed in an instant.

The life of the hard drive is very long because the drive heads never actually touch the disk they fly over the disk reading information.

There are several different ways in which you can measure your hard disks performance, by the data rate, which is the number of bytes that can be delivered to the CPU in a second or by the seek time. The seek time is the amount of time it takes your drive to find the requested information and then send it to the CPU. The size of the disk is the amount of data that the disk can store.

Your hard drive will affect your computers performance. This is measured by the seek time or how much information can be sent to your CPU, also known as the data rate. The seek time measures how long it takes your computer to locate the requested information and then transfer it to your CPU. All of your drives will come with a maximum amount of storage space available.

All hard disks come in sealed boxes an d if you break the seal then you will have broken your warranty. This sealed container is very important as it keeps out all dust and other particles. If particles settle on the disk then this can damage the disk or make it not work. When computer technicians open up a hard drive this is done in a clean room that has no particles.
